Marcel Zwietering awarded the IAFP Europe Food Safety Award

Congratulations to Dr Marcel Zwietering, who has been awarded the prestigious Europe Food Safety Award at the International Association for Food Protection’s (IAFP) European Symposium on Food Safety, held in Madrid, Spain, from 6 to 8 May 2025.
This award recognises an active IAFP Member based in Europe for outstanding and sustained contributions to the field of food safety on the continent.
Dr Zwietering has served as Professor of Food Microbiology at Wageningen University since 2003. His research spans a broad range of topics, including food safety management, risk analysis, fermentation, microbial detection and hygiene, eco-physiology, and functional genomics.
Throughout his academic career, Dr Zwietering has played a pivotal role in shaping food safety education. He has developed and taught several key MSc courses—such as Food Microbiology, Advanced Food Microbiology, Food Safety Risk Assessment, and Food Safety Management—which have benefited students from across Europe and around the world.
His influence extends far beyond the classroom. Through research, teaching, and active engagement with stakeholders, Dr Zwietering has significantly advanced food safety knowledge and practices among regulatory authorities, industry professionals, academics, and consumers—both in Europe and globally.
Background information
Since 2005, IAFP’s European Symposium has been shaping the future of food safety by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas with colleagues from across Europe working in industry, government, and academia. The Symposium is an excellent forum to gain knowledge about the latest developments and techniques in food science and safety. The symposium was held from in Madrid, Spain, from 6 to 8 May 2025.
