ICMSF Workshop Highlights Role of Microbiological Sampling in Food Safety at IAFP 2025

28 July 2025

The ICMSF hosted a well-attended workshop titled “Useful Microbiological Sampling and Testing in Food Safety” as part of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) Annual Meeting in Cleveland on Saturday, 25 July 2025.

Moderated by leading experts Leon Gorris, Marcel Zwietering and John Donaghy, the workshop introduced participants to the principles and practical applications of microbiological sampling and testing within food safety frameworks. The session focused on its role in monitoring, verification of process control, and food lot acceptance.

Participants explored the statistical foundations of effective sampling and testing strategies, including hands-on guidance in using the ICMSF statistical sampling plan tool. This tool assists users in designing and evaluating the performance of microbiological sampling plans, offering practical value to both regulators and food industry professionals.

The relevance of microbiological testing through sampling plans in the broader context of Food Safety Management Systems was underscored throughout the workshop. Case studies and examples helped illustrate its critical role in ensuring food safety and compliance.

The interactive format sparked a day of lively discussion, with participants engaging enthusiastically in questions, debate and exchange of ideas with the moderators, a testament to the importance and practical relevance of the topic.
