In Memoriam Frank Busta (24 January 2026)

The ICMSF mourns the loss but celebrates the food safety and protection legacy left by Francis Fredrick Busta, PhD. Frank was a member of ICMSF from 1985-2000 and served as Treasurer from 1998-2000.

He made enduring contributions to organisations around the world as a trusted colleague, mentor, and leader. His commitment to service, fairness, and collaboration enriched the mission of ICMSF and inspired all who had the privilege to work alongside him. Frank was renowned for his integrity, his generosity, and the genuine respect with which he treated every individual, regardless of background or nationality.

Frank was Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota (UM) Department of Food Science and Nutrition (FSCN) and served as its Chair from 1987 to 1998.  He was Chair of FSCN at the University of Florida from 1984 to 1987. His PhD in Food Science with an emphasis on microbiology from the University of Illinois (1963) launched his illustrious academic career in research, teaching and professional leadership, including North Carolina State University – Raleigh and the previously mentioned institutions.

In 1997, he established and directed the US National Center for Food Protection and Defense, which coordinated research projects among numerous universities, food companies and government agencies to raise awareness and protection against deliberate contamination of food by terrorists. His scientific knowledge and focused practical application kept him in high demand among these organisations, and during his career, professional travel took him to over 50 countries.

Dr Busta was a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST in UK), the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP), and the Academy of the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST).

We honour Frank’s achievements, celebrate his life, and remember the lasting impact he had on our international community. While he is deeply missed, his spirit remains at the heart of our shared purpose and ongoing work. As stated in his Memoriam on the University of Minnesota’s Department of Food Science and Nutrition website, “It is impossible to adequately summarise the impact made by one such as Dr Busta. His influence on our profession, and on his mentees, colleagues, and friends, is incalculable.”
