LAS-ICMSF contributes to successful IAFP Latin American Symposium in Argentina
13 October 2026
The IAFP Latin American Symposium, held in Argentina on 28 and 29 September 2026, brought together more than 600 participants, with approximately 38% attending from countries outside Argentina. The event provided an important platform for scientific exchange, regional collaboration and discussions on food safety and microbiological standards.
Members of the Latin American Subcommission of the International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods (LAS-ICMSF) made significant contributions to the symposium through presentations, panel discussions and a specialised post-symposium workshop.
Advancing discussions on microbiological criteria
Two LAS-ICMSF members participated as speakers in roundtable discussions, while the Subcommission organised a dedicated panel exploring the use and implementation of microbiological criteria across Latin America.
The panel involved five LAS-ICMSF members and one prospective member, with four panellists and two moderators facilitating the discussion. The session attracted a capacity audience of more than 50 participants, with additional attendees standing at the back of the room.
Strong audience engagement and lively discussions highlighted the importance of harmonising approaches to microbiological criteria and addressing practical challenges in their implementation across the region.
Successful post-symposium workshop
LAS-ICMSF member Miguel Zazopulos, from Chile, organised a post-symposium workshop focusing on the application and interpretation of microbiological criteria within Argentine food regulations.
The workshop attracted 20 participants from government and industry, predominantly from Argentina. Active participation and positive feedback reflected the value of practical discussions on the interpretation and implementation of microbiological criteria in regulatory settings.
Recognition of Dr Silvia Raffellini
A further highlight was the presentation of the Dr Roberto A. Cacchione Award to LAS-ICMSF member Dr Silvia Raffellini, from Argentina, in recognition of her longstanding contributions to the Argentine Association of Microbiology.
The award ceremony celebrated nearly 30 years of her involvement with the Association, acknowledging her dedication, professional achievements and contributions across various areas of its activities.
ICMSF warmly congratulates Dr Raffellini on this well-deserved recognition.
Strengthening regional food safety collaboration
The successful participation of LAS-ICMSF in the symposium reinforced the Subcommission’s commitment to promoting science-based approaches to food safety, supporting the effective application of microbiological criteria and fostering collaboration among scientists, regulators and industry professionals throughout Latin America.
